Breathe Better, Sleep Deeper: The Dental Connection to Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
By Ian Kerr BDS MSc LLM FCGDent, Dentist at StoneRock Dental Care
Waking up tired despite a full night’s sleep? Snoring that rattles more than just your partner’s nerves?
It might be more than just poor rest. You could be living with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)—a serious, often undiagnosed condition that impacts more than just your energy levels.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnoea?
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) occurs when the airway becomes partially or fully blocked during sleep, causing you to stop breathing—often multiple times per hour. These interruptions can last from a few seconds to over a minute, fragmenting your sleep and depriving your brain and body of oxygen.
Common signs include:
- Loud, habitual snoring
- Morning headaches
- Dry mouth or sore throat on waking
- Daytime fatigue or difficulty concentrating
- Mood changes or irritability
- Witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep
Many sufferers don’t realise they have OSA until a partner notices the signs—or until serious health consequences emerge.
Why It Matters
Left untreated, OSA increases your risk of:
- High blood pressure and heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- Stroke
- Weight gain and metabolic disorders
- Cognitive decline and poor mental health
It’s not just about snoring—it’s about your long-term wellbeing.
How Dentistry Can Help
While OSA is diagnosed by a sleep physician through a sleep study, dentists play a key role in screening and management. As a dentist with the appropriate training and post graduate qualifications I can manage patients diagnosed with mild to moderate OSA as well as those with severe OSA who cannot adapt to use of the gold standard treatment of CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure).
At StoneRock Dental Care, I work closely with local GPs, ENT consultants, and sleep clinics to help patients find effective, practical solutions. One of the most successful treatments for certain types of OSA is a custom-made dental appliance known as a Mandibular Advancement Device, that brings the jaw forward at night helping to keep the airway open during sleep.
This treatment is:
- Non-invasive
- Quiet and comfortable
- Highly effective for many patients
- Easy to travel with
- A first choice treatment for many people with mild to moderate OSA
- An alternative to CPAP for patients who despite all efforts cannot tolerate CPAP
My Approach
Over the course of my 35-year career in dentistry, I’ve developed a special interest in patients experiencing chronic oro-facial pain. For many years dentists saw jaw pain as a dental issue but now the complex relationship between tooth-grinding habits, headaches, jaw pain, and OSA has opened up the world of dental sleep medicine. I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Dental Sleep Medicine to complement my training, studies, and published research in the field of pain management. My understanding of the condition and how it links to other dental problems like tooth grinding, jaw pain, and facial muscle tension has allowed me to help many more patients than I ever could before.
Patients often come to me with chronic jaw pain, unexplained tooth wear, or morning headaches—and it turns out sleep apnoea is a hidden cause. Identifying and treating OSA through a dental lens can significantly improve both quality of sleep and dental health.
A Word on Care
I believe patients deserve clarity, empathy, and calm, unhurried conversations—especially when the issue is as personal and disruptive as sleep. My practice at StoneRock Dental Care in Hawkhurst is built around these principles. We combine leading-edge training and technology with a strong belief in kindness and respect.
If You Suspect Sleep Apnoea…
Don’t ignore the signs. Snoring can ruin more than a good night’s sleep; it can destroy relationships. OSA can be a serious, life-altering condition—but it’s also highly treatable one. Whether you’re newly diagnosed or just beginning to ask questions, I’m here to help.
