Since completing my Certificate in Implantology, I am continuing to train under the mentorship of Antonio De Vivo our implant surgeon who has over 20 years experience in implantology and currently places over 400 implants a year. Today I completed my first Implant Case using a “flawless” approach which means we can place the implant directly through a very small hole created in the gum that means there is not need for suturing (stitches) at the end of the procedure and, typically, little or no post-operative discomfort.
This approach reduces the overall treatment time by as much as 30 minutes which is great for patient comfort but it should be stressed that it is a more tricky procedure to deliver correctly as the work beneath the gum, in the bone, is carried out “blind” meaning the operator loses a degree of spatial awareness and must rely much more on tactile feel and angulation of the burs into the surgical site.
This approach is not appropriate for cases where there are concerns over the location of important anatomical structures below the gum or where there is very little bone available but when it can be used there is no doubt that it enhances patient comfort during and after the procedure.
This photo (not from the actual case) shows the how small the surgical site is and how neat the procedure looks immediately after placement of the implant. The implant is covered over with a metal healing abutment that sits just up above the gum and allows for quick, problem free healing around it.
