When people are very conscious about their teeth they will often, inadvertently, try to hide them from others. This is often seen as a “tight lipped” smile or a hand gesture to cover the mouth when smiling or laughing. Sadly these understandable and entirely innocent bits of body language can be misinterpreted by others. We can be wary of an individual and fail to warm to them or trust them because we are not seeing an open smile.
If we can give people the teeth they want then the smile quickly grows and we see the “true” smile line. This can be a headache for dentists some times as we try to base tooth position around lip lines and these can be seen to change dramatically once work is completely. Fortunately most of the time we just see our customers “grow” into their smile as they become more confident. It is truly rewarding aspect of what we do and one that never fails to bring a smile to our faces as well.
This case was a multi-discipline case involving months of treatment for his gum disease followed by root canal filings and finally a combination of veneers and crowns. The case highlights our treatment goals of “health”, “function” and “beauty”, in that order; always.
